Art - Summa

7 MYTHICAL BUGS
My name is Ursula and I am originally from Argentina.

For the last twenty-eight years, I have worked as an architect in various countries. Parallel to my work as an architect-designer, I have been creating artwork. I love nature. Many of my paintings show the light and magnificent aspects of the natural world while others indicate my architectural background. Buildings have some kind of magic, probably because they are impregnated with the stories and feelings of the people who used them.

My stories reflect the legends, beliefs, and mythology of South American countries. Words appear in my mind through "flashes" of colorful images. Folklore and popular beliefs and customs have an incredible richness capable of inspiring all forms of art.

At fifty-four years old, I have written half of the pages of my life's adventures; the other half is waiting to be written. I feel I will be working in the years to come creating objects of art and less as an architect. Art, design, and creativity are what give sense to my life. There are songs in my heart still waiting to find and express the voice of my soul.

Stories have always been the spark of my design. I remember as a child imagining stories about insects. Somehow I was fascinated by them, especially the ones with wings. In my mind I imaged myself riding a dragonfly, being in battle between grasshopper clans, flying to the moon on a moth, being a queen in a hive, directing a choir of cicadas, dancing and flying with butterflies, and writing "Good Luck" to everyone who could find a ladybug.

Based on these wonderful stories of my childhood, I designed 7 MYTHICAL BUGS. It is a series of artwork done in a unique process that involves watercolor, digital art, crunched and glued rice paper, pastels and ink. Using my knowledge of hand-made art combined with the limitless possibilities of digital art, I evolved a unique style that will define my future art.

Because I believe art should be affordable to everyone, I will print a limited edition of 100 posters of each piece. Glicce prints also will be available as will originals of each through the process that I am using. All will be available by November 15 and all posters will be signed and numbered.

Art-Summa (summa from Latin means the highest part or whole). Under this name I will create a diverse line of objects that can be used in product development such as book illustration and art design.

The Selection

  • For the art pieces, I have selected seven colors, seven insects and seven flowers and leaves. Why seven? I feel seven has a kind of magic in the mythology of all cultures. Maybe it is because light has seven colors; maybe it is because human beings have seven centers of energy; maybe it is because our lives are organized in periods of seven days; maybe it is because it seems that every seven years our lives go through major changes.

I chose the bugs carefully because they exist everywhere in our planet which gives my "Insects Art Series" a planetarium unity. The flowers and leaves were selected just because I like them.

The process

1. First, a basic composition is done with crayons and ink. I work this composition in the computer program Photoshop to get different angles.

2. I select the one I like best. Then, using watercolors, I develop the background which then is scanned into the computer and manipulated with Photoshop.

3. The "bugs" are manipulated digitally and superimposed on the background.

4. After the composition is done, I print it on rice paper in several sheets.

5. Every sheet is cut and crunched into a small ball of paper. Then, it is carefully extended, glued and pressed onto a free acid board. This creates a very interesting texture. The process of gluing is very difficult because every sheet of paper stretches differently. Sometimes it takes several tries until every part coincides in the overlapping; then it works correctly.

6. After it dries a fine acrylic coat is applied that allows me to work highlights in certain areas with pastels and to better define the insects with a thin contour of ink.

7. Using natural light, high resolution photographs are taken and we "square" them slightly to be ready for printing.

I love the results!
Enjoy!

I invite everybody visiting this page to follow my evolution in this great adventure!
